High Ceiling Smoke Detection: Atriums, Hangars and Halls

High ceiling smoke detection with Kidde Commercial ModuLaser aspirating smoke detection and sampling pipes

High ceiling smoke detection is a known problem. In an atrium, a hangar or a large hall, smoke cools as it rises. It can stop below the ceiling and never reach a normal detector.

In this guide, we explain why this happens, which technologies help and how an aspirating system is designed for tall spaces. We also show where Kidde Global Solutions products fit.

Why high ceiling smoke detection is difficult

Hot smoke rises, but in a tall room it mixes with cooler air on the way up. This layer of warm air under the roof is called stratification. As a result, a weak or smouldering fire may never push smoke to a detector fitted at 15 metres.

In addition, a detector at that height is hard to reach, so testing and maintenance need lifts or scaffolding.

Options for high ceiling smoke detection

Three technologies are common. The table shows how they compare.

How aspirating high ceiling smoke detection works

The pipe network runs at roof level, and at lower levels if needed. Also, small sampling holes draw air from these heights to a detector that you can reach from the floor. Because the detector is very sensitive, it can find thin smoke that never reaches a point detector.

For tall spaces, designers often add sampling points at more than one level. For example, they may fit one pipe near the ceiling and another lower down, to catch smoke trapped in the warm layer. Ask the manufacturer for the design rules for your height.

Where high ceiling smoke detection matters

Products for tall spaces

The ModuLaser suits large, complex spaces. Also, each detector module supports up to 250 m of sampling pipe, and the separate modules allow discrete zones with no overlap. The detector sits in an accessible area, as described on the AirSense page. For smaller halls, the MiniLaser covers up to 1,600 m² on one zone.

Ofte stillede spørgsmål

Why do normal smoke detectors fail at high ceilings?

Smoke cools and mixes with air as it rises, so it can stay below the ceiling. In addition, detectors at great height are hard to test.

Can an aspirating detector protect a very tall hall?

Yes, when the pipe network is designed with sampling points at suitable heights. The detector itself stays at an accessible level.

Is a beam detector better for high ceilings?

Beam detectors cover wide spans well, but they need a clear line of sight. Aspirating detection suits cases where you need discreet, very early warning.

How high can I install sampling pipes?

It depends on the design rules of the product and the local code. Ask the manufacturer for design help on tall spaces.
