Aspirating Smoke Detector Maintenance: A Practical Guide

Aspirating smoke detector maintenance on an AirSense MiniLaser detector mounted on a wall

Aspirating smoke detector maintenance is simple, but it must not be skipped. The system pulls air through pipes and a filter all day, so dust slowly builds up and the airflow changes.

In this guide, we explain what to check, how often and what to do when a reading looks wrong. Always follow the manual of your system and the rules of your country.

Why aspirating smoke detector maintenance matters

An aspirating detector works only if clean air flows through the pipes. A blocked hole or a dirty filter lowers the airflow, and this slows the smoke on its way to the sensor. Regular maintenance keeps the detector as sensitive as the day it was commissioned.

In addition, aspirating smoke detector maintenance gives you proof for your insurer and for the authorities that the system works.

What to check at every service visit

Use this short list as a base for your aspirating smoke detector maintenance.

How to change the filter

The filter protects the sensor from dust. Also, replace it with the exact spare part for your detector. The ModuLaser, MiniLaser and HSSD2 share the same replacement dust filter, so one spare part code covers the whole family.

  1. Tell the building users and put the panel in test mode.
  2. Open the detector as shown in the manual.
  3. Remove the old filter and fit the new one in the same direction.
  4. Close the detector and check that the airflow returns to a normal value.
  5. Write the date of the change in the service record.

A simple maintenance schedule

The table below gives a practical base. Your local rules may ask for more.

WhenWhat to do
After commissioningStore the airflow baseline and the transport times
Every visitRead the event log, check airflow and look at the display
Yearly, or as the rules requireRun the full test with smoke, check the filter and the pipes
After any building workCheck pipes and holes, and repeat the smoke test if the layout changed

Maintenance in dusty and cold sites

Dusty sites need filter checks more often. Cold stores and clean rooms have their own needs, so read our guide on cleanroom fire detection. For the full test method, see aspirating smoke detector testing.

Products and spares

Spare parts for the ModuLaser and MiniLaser include the replacement dust filter (9-30699N), the 3 m sampling pipe and the STX2410-E power supply. For technical help, visit our support page.

Ključne informacije

Često postavljana pitanja

How often should I change the filter of an aspirating smoke detector?

It depends on how dusty the room is. Follow the maker’s manual and change it when the airflow reading or the display tells you to.

What happens if I never maintain the detector?

Dust and blocked holes reduce the airflow, so smoke reaches the sensor later. The detector may also raise airflow faults.

Can I do the maintenance myself?

Simple checks and filter changes can often be done by trained site staff. The full test with smoke and the panel checks should be done by a qualified engineer.

Do I need to repeat the test after building work?

Yes. New walls, ducts or racking can change the airflow, so check the pipes and repeat the smoke test.
