A good aspirating smoke detector installation starts on paper, not on the ceiling. The pipe layout decides how fast smoke reaches the detector, so most problems that appear later were created at the design stage.
In this guide, we walk through the installation in the order the work is done. Always use the design drawing and the manual that come with your system. We show the general method.
Plan before you install
First, get a design that shows the pipe routes, the position of every sampling hole and the expected transport time. Then check the site against the design. Walls, beams, ducts and racking often force small changes, and each change must be checked against the design rules.
Holes, pipe length and balance work together, so design them as one system.
Aspirating smoke detector installation: the main steps
The work follows a clear order.
- Fix the detector. Mount it in an accessible place, such as a service corridor or plant room, so you can reach the display and the filter later.
- Run the pipes. Follow the drawing, use the pipe type the maker specifies and support the pipe at regular points.
- Make the joints airtight. Glue every joint, because a leak lets in air from the wrong place and slows the smoke.
- Drill the sampling holes. Make each hole at the size and spacing shown in the design, then fit the end cap.
- Connect power and signals. Wire the supply, the relay or addressable interface and the network cable to the panel.
- Commission the system. Set the sensitivity, run the airflow check and record the baseline values.
Practical tips for pipes and holes
Small habits make a big difference to any aspirating smoke detector installation.
- Keep the pipe run as short and as straight as the room allows.
- Avoid sampling holes in direct airflow from air handling units unless the design says so.
- Use a quick-fit pipe adaptor system where the product supports it. The ModuLaser detector module has one, with pipe and cable entry at the top or the bottom.
- Label every pipe at both ends, so that later engineers can follow the network.
Connecting to the fire alarm panel
The detector must report to the fire panel in a clear way. On a ModuLaser network, an addressable panel interface card plugs into the display module with a ribbon cable, so every detector reports to the Excellence panel on the addressable loop. For other panels, relay outputs are available. Read more about input and output modules.
Commissioning and handover
Aspirating smoke detector installation is not finished until the system is tested. After commissioning, run the full test, store the airflow baseline and hand the records to the customer. Follow the steps in our guide on aspirating smoke detector testing.
Products for the installation
Common parts include the ModuLaser or MiniLaser detector, the MiniLaser expansion housing and input and output module, the 3 m sampling pipe lengths and the STX2410-E 27.6 V, 10 A power supply. Find the range on the aspirating smoke detection page.
Odvoz ključev
- Good installation starts with a good design and ends with a full test.
- Keep pipes short and joints airtight so the smoke reaches the detector fast.
- Mount the detector where you can reach the display and the filter.
- Connect to the panel through the right interface and record the airflow baseline.
Pogosta vprašanja
Who can install an aspirating smoke detector?
A trained fire alarm installer, following the design and the maker’s manual. The system also connects to the fire panel, so competence matters.
How long does an installation take?
It depends on the size of the pipe network and the access to the ceiling. Small rooms can be quick, while large sites need careful planning.
Can pipes be hidden?
Yes. Pipes can run above ceilings with only small sampling points visible, which is why aspirating detectors suit heritage and design-led spaces.
Do I need to seal the pipe joints?
Yes. Leaks change the airflow and the transport time, so each joint should be glued as the maker instructs.
