Why electrical room fire detection is special
Most electrical fires start slowly. A loose connection or an overloaded cable heats up, and its insulation begins to smoulder. At this stage there is little heat and no flame, but there is a small amount of smoke.
A normal detector waits for that smoke to reach it. By then, the fault may already be damaging expensive equipment. For this reason, very early warning is valuable in electrical rooms.
How aspirating electrical room fire detection works
An aspirating detector samples air through small pipes and measures particles all the time. In a switchgear room, designers can place sampling holes near the equipment, and even inside cabinets with small sampling tubes, so the smoke from a hot connection is found at the source.

Design points for electrical rooms
Think about these points early.
- Airflow. Cooling fans move air, so place holes where the smoke will pass.
- Cabinets. Sample inside important cabinets if the design allows.
- Alarm levels. Use a low level for a warning to the technician, and a higher level for the fire alarm.
- Outputs. Decide what the alarm should do, such as alert the control room or shut down ventilation.
- Access. Keep the detector, the display and the filter in a place that is safe to reach.
