EN 54 standards explained

The parts of the European EN 54 series for fire detection and fire alarm systems, what each covers, and how EN 54 compares with UL.

Why EN 54 matters

EN 54 is the European series of standards for fire detection and fire alarm systems. Each part sets requirements and tests for one type of product, so a detector, a panel or a sounder from different makers can be trusted to work as a system when they are certified. Specifiers, installers and authorities look for EN 54 certification before they accept a product.

CE marking and EN 54

In the European Union, products covered by a harmonised EN 54 part must carry the CE mark under the Construction Products Regulation, backed by a declaration of performance from the manufacturer and a certificate from a notified body. A product that is only tested but not certified is not enough for a European project.

EN 54 and UL

EN 54 is the European standard. Projects in the Middle East and North America are often specified to UL, for example UL 268 for smoke detectors and UL 864 for control units. Many Middle East projects accept both, and some require one. Kidde Global Solutions offers products for both, and your contact confirms the listings that apply to your project.
